When my mother first told me that I should make salt pigs, I had no idea what she was talking about. So I googled salt pig and frankly thought the idea was a bit silly.
Why are they called salt pigs? No one is sure, but most think it comes from the Scottish “pig”, which is an earthenware bowl.
I experimented and figured out how to throw and alter a small bowl to make a salt pig. I put them on our Etsy store and they are one of the most searched for pottery items! I still didn’t quite understand why they were so popular.
So, I tried one in my own kitchen and now we have several of these and love using them! They make it so convenient to add a pinch of salt or measure out salt for a recipe. They are so handy, it is hard to imagine not having at least one! I have been working on a new handbuilt design that works and looks great too.
